I am a self-taught quilter. My mother sewed some of my clothes when I was small. I took art classes in college. I became a social worker and worked with teens and families before devoting myself to my own. As they grew I saved some of their clothes. In the early 00’s I was inspired by the Gee’s Bend Quilters show at the Whitney Museum, and made a baby quilt by hand for a new niece using what I had saved. I wanted to make more (but not by hand!), so Modest Machine came to live with me.

It’s a Brother.  I put stickers on it, try to oil it regularly. My niece is 12 and my boys are men. The Whitney Museum put up a spectacular new museum downtown.  I’m still making quilts, but also making pieces to hang on the wall.
